Ingredients

9-inch round or square baking dish
1 box white or yellow cake mix (plus ingredients listed on package)
3 oz red gelatin (unflavored dry powder)
3 oz blue gelatin (unflavored dry powder)
2 cups milk (divided)
1/2 cup sugar for jello (adjust to taste)
2 cups whipping cream
1 tsp vanilla extract
Assorted red, white, and blue nonpareils or jimmies
Optional: maraschino cherries for decoration


Instructions

Preheat oven to temperature specified on cake mix box
Prepare cake batter according to box instructions, using 3 cups total liquid (2 cups milk plus remaining liquid from box)
Pour batter into prepared pan and bake as directed
While cake cools, pour 2 cups milk into separate bowl
Sprinkle 1.5 oz red gelatin into milk and stir until dissolved
Carefully poke holes in warm cake using skewer and pour red jello mixture evenly
Repeat with blue jello using remaining milk
Let cake rest 10 minutes
