A creamy, sweet Southern casserole made with caramelized Vidalia onions and a golden, crunchy top. This easy, family-approved recipe serves as a comforting side dish for any occasion.
Ingredients
6 cups thinly sliced Vidalia onions
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
2 cups milk
1/2 cup cream of mushroom soup
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1/2 cup breadcrumbs or panko
1 teaspoon dried thyme
Salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C)
Caramelize onions in a skillet over medium heat with 2 tablespoons butter for 20 minutes
In a bowl, mix cream of mushroom soup, flour, remaining butter, milk, thyme, salt, and pepper
Layer onions in a greased casserole dish, cover with soup mixture
Top with shredded cheddar cheese and breadcrumbs
Bake for 45 minutes or until golden and bubbly
Let cool slightly before serving warm
Notes
Use halal-certified cheddar if desired
To increase crunch, toast breadcrumbs ahead of time
