Description
This comforting and hearty one-pan meal is the perfect solution for busy weeknights. It features al dente penne pasta and crisp-tender broccoli florets tossed in a velvety, homemade cheddar cheese sauce with savory smoked turkey sausage. It is a nutritious, family-friendly dinner that keeps cleanup to a minimum while ensuring everyone leaves the table satisfied.
Ingredients
8 ounces penne pasta
2 cups fresh broccoli, cut into bite-sized florets
13.9 ounces smoked turkey sausage, sliced into rounds
1 1/2 cups whole milk
1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 small yellow onion, diced
1 teaspoon minced garlic
Instructions
Cook the penne pasta in a large pot of salted boiling water according to package directions. Add the broccoli florets to the pasta water during the final two minutes of cooking. Drain well and set aside.
In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
Add the diced onion and sliced turkey sausage to the skillet, sautéing until the onion is translucent and the sausage is lightly browned.
Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
Pour in the milk and bring to a gentle simmer.
Gradually stir in the shredded cheddar cheese until the sauce is smooth and melted.
Add the cooked pasta and broccoli to the skillet, tossing to coat thoroughly in the cheese sauce until warmed through.
Notes
For a richer sauce, substitute the milk with half-and-half. Shredding your own cheese block provides a smoother melt compared to pre-shredded varieties. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days.
