Description

This comforting bread pudding transforms humble stale bread into a luxurious, warm dessert. Featuring a rich, custard-soaked interior and a crisp, golden topping, it is infused with warming notes of cinnamon and nutmeg. Finished with a decadent, silky homemade vanilla cream sauce, this classic American treat is perfectly suited for family gatherings or cozy nights at home. It is simple to prepare, budget-friendly, and consistently delicious.

Ingredients

6 cups stale challah or brioche bread, cut into 1-inch chunks
2 cups whole milk
3 large eggs
1 cup granulated sugar
2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
1.5 tbsp pure vanilla extract
1 tsp ground cinnamon
0.5 tsp ground nutmeg
0.5 cup butter (for sauce)
1 cup sugar (for sauce)
0.5 cup heavy whipping cream (for sauce)
1 tbsp vanilla extract (for sauce)

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350°F and grease an 8×8-inch casserole dish.
Place the bread chunks evenly into the prepared baking dish.
In a large bowl, whisk together milk, eggs, sugar, melted butter, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg until well combined.
Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread and let it soak for 10 minutes.
Bake for 55 minutes until the center is set and the top is golden brown.
While baking, melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat for the sauce.
Stir in sugar and cream, simmering until thickened, then remove from heat and stir in the vanilla.
Drizzle the warm vanilla sauce over the bread pudding before serving.

Notes

Ensure bread is truly stale to absorb the custard best. You can prep the pudding dish up to 4 hours in advance and keep it in the refrigerator before baking. Store leftovers covered in the fridge for up to 3 days.
